Gerd Geerling
Gerd Geerling is a Professor of Ophthalmology and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital in Duesseldorf, Germany. During his tenure, he established a tertiary referral service for severe corneal and ocular surface disorders, including dry eye and severe ocular adnexal diseases. Professor Geerling studied medicine at the Medical School of the RWTH Aachen, Germany, King’s College, and the University of London prior to specialist training in Ophthalmology at the University of Luebeck in Germany. Dr. Geerling also received subspecialist training at London’s Moorfields Eye Hospital in Cornea and External Eye Disease and Oculoplastic Surgery, while also a research fellow at the Institute of Ophthalmology in London and the Institute for Biomedical Optics at the University of Luebeck. Dr. Geerling was a consultant surgeon in Cornea and Oculoplastics at the Department of Ophthalmology in Luebeck until 2005 when he was appointed as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Wuerzburg, Germany. His clinical and research interests include the anterior segment (cornea, glaucoma and cataract), ocular adnexal disease and a focus in corneal and external diseases. He also has a particular interest in very severe ocular surface disease, dry eye, corneal infections and inflammatory disorders. In 2015, he established the comprehensive Düsseldorf Keratoprosthesis program and the German Keratomycosis registry. Dr. Geerling has published over 170 peer-reviewed papers and 30 other publications, authored 20 chapters, and was the editor of 4 books. Professor Geerling has served as Editor in Chief of Current Eye Research for the last 13 years and is currently a board member of four scientific peer-reviewed ophthalmic journals. He has reviewed manuscripts and grant applications for over 20 scientific journals, including IOVS, Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology and Cornea, the German Research Council, the Medical Research Council of the UK, the National Medical Research Council of Singapore and the European Medicines Agency (EMA). He is a longstanding member of ARVO, DOG, TFOS and other scientific associations, has been awarded scholarships by the German Research Council (DFG), the Special Trustees of Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Gertrud Kusen Foundation, and was the recipient of over 10 national and international awards.
