Niko Setälä
Niko Setälä is a clinician and ocular surgeon with a strong background in basic science. Before he graduated as a medical doctor at the turn of the millennium, he researched different tissue inflammatory mechanisms. While working as a clinical ophthalmologist and university teacher, Dr. Setälä did his thesis on tear fluid lipids and their regulation. His resent academic focuses on the pathogenesis of DED. Dr. Setälä is also interested in studying molecular interactions in DED treatment, is an investigator in a myopia follow-up study, participating in visual field imaging technology development, and is one of the editors of the recently published Finnish handbook of Ophthalmology. For the last decade, Dr. Setälä has worked as the Head of Ophthalmology in the biggest central hospital in Finland, and he provides dry eye disease consultation. Niko lives by the lake in the central Finland with his Ophthalmologist wife and three children. Niko enjoys food, computer programming, and traveling with family in his leisure time.
